Sahaj Marg on the Essence of Life

Sahaj Marg on the Essence of Life

It takes time to understand where the essence of life lies. Sahaj Marg, this way of the heart, makes one aware of the need to advance spiritually in this particular area – namely, the opening of specific points that foster real progress of the subtle being. In this regard, the work is focused on what is essential. With time, our abhyasis become familiar with certain important rituals capable of opening up wider perspectives. The opening of the heart in these specific points remains the hallmark of this extraordinary spiritual journey.

It is so interesting to read this message from Babuji Maharaj. One can see how much emphasis is made on what is essential. It is clear from this message that the key work happens in the secret of the heart, with respect to opening specific points which enables real progress. In Sahaj Marg, this is the most essential aspect, the important aspect, of this work on the heart of the abhyasi. This work done by the Masters of Sahaj Marg, Babuji Maharaj, Chariji Maharaj, and now the current Master, Shri Kamlesh D Patel, in the heart of the abhyasis, using Transmission as a tool, is the most essential thing and this is what results in the transformation of the being. With this transformation made possible, the abhyasi begins to understand the difference between what is essential and what is superfluous and thus a state of Viveka (Discrimination) is naturally developed in the abhyasi. The abhyasi's overall approach to life itself changes, all thanks to the "essential" work done by the Masters of Sahaj Marg, along with the help of SRCM Preceptors of Sahaj Marg. As Chariji Maharaj says, the Preceptors are the "Arteries" of Sahaj Marg, through which pure blood is circulated throughout the human system for its well-being. Shri Kamlesh Patel talks about how transmission flows into the heart and the work of transformation of the abhyasi begins in his book Designing Destiny.

Transmission: Shri Kamlesh D Patel

Transmission: Shri Kamlesh D Patel

When transmission starts flowing towards the heart, we feel the presence or the flow of transmission and slowly get absorbed with it.

That now brings me to the most important and fundamental point in Sahaj Marg. In a sense we can think of Sahaj Marg as operating in three layers. The lowest is the cleaning of the past impressions by the Master's own power. The middle level is our own effort in meditation and avoiding such thoughts or such activities that can create further impressions. And at the apex we have the most important feature, and that is the system of transmission that is unique to this system.

Power of Prayer: Sahaj Marg Snippet

This incident happened in 1945. Rev. Chariji Maharaj narrated this incident to a few abhyasis in 1985.

One day, some dacoits entered the house of sis. Kasturi, who lived in Lakhimpur Kheri. The dacoits started to threaten sis. Kasturi with guns. She simply sat in Prayer.  Rev. Babuji Maharaj was in Shahjahanpur at that time and he received this prayer. So, Babuji Maharaj started transmitting. The dacoits, all of a sudden, threw their guns down, prostrated at the feet of sis. Kasturi and told her with folded hands, "Behenji, please forgive us, we have come to a wrong house". Saying this, they ran away.

Rev. Chariji told us, "You see the power of the Prayer".

The aspect of Prayer is a key element of the Sahaj Marg practice. It is like a “Connecting Link”. When an abhyasi puts himself in a deep supplicant mood and offers prayer, the Master is in some way able to hear the prayer, and the prayer is answered. Chariji Maharaj says, our Sahaj Marg Prayer is like a switch, which, when turned on, allows electricity to pass through and turn on the light or any other appliance. Similarly, by uttering the Sahaj Marg Prayer just once, a connection with the Master is created, and the flow of transmission commences thereafter.

Shri Kamlesh Patel, the current President of Shri Ram Chandra Mission (www.srcm.org) has also talked about Sahaj Marg Prayer. Regarding the night-time prayer, Kamlesh D Patel said that suggest to yourself that all night through, I will remain connected to Master and as soon as I get up, I will meditate again. I will invite Master with my conscious mind now and will remain connected throughout the sleep hours. One other aspect that Kamlesh Patel mentions is the attitude of Prayer, about how very lovingly we invite Master and this love creates vibrations in the heart. This key element of love and humility is essential when we offer prayer to the divine.

Inner Perfection: Kamlesh D. Patel

Inner Perfection

We are moving towards perfection. Perfection in what? Not in our outer look or fancies or other stuff. It is the perfection in our inner balance, our inner flawless character, and our manners.

Taken from the book "Designing Destiny (2nd edn., 2015)", Chapter "Our Collective Destiny", pg. 166, by Kamlesh D. Patel

Observation:
In one other talk, the SRCM President, Shri. Kamlesh D. Patel mentioned that life itself is given to us to orient towards perfection and excel in anything that we may do, and here he clarifies that perfection is about Inner Perfection and goes on to add the inherent need for Balance, Character and Behaviour in order to achieve this. The Sahaj Marg system of Raja Yoga meditation provides all the tools necessary to proceed along these lines and work tirelessly towards achieving this Inner Perfection. The spiritual Master of this system of Sahaj Marg, Shri. Kamlesh D. Patel, using the unique concept of Transmission assists the aspirants in achieving this perfection.

What really evolves? Sahaj Marg says…

During his recent stay at Manapakkam Ashram for about 3 weeks or so, the President of Shri Ram Chandra Mission, Shri. Kamlesh D. Patel gave a few talks, a couple of which were directed towards the process of evolution. I was lucky to listen to two of his talks and based on what I heard from Shri. Kamlesh, the Master of Sahaj Marg and Spiritual Successor of Chariji Maharaj, and based on further introspection, I present the following points on this topic.

Spiritual science talks a lot about evolution, progress, growth, transformation, change, becoming, etc., all very confusing and rightly so. Shri. Kamlesh D. Patel, in his talks covered this topic and at least for me, he de-mystified this topic to a great extent and I take this opportunity to expand on this topic.

So, in the context of the spiritual journey of a practitioner, what really evolves? Is it the body, any aspect of the mind or the soul? Let us take the body first. Right from the instant of conception, as cells begin to divide, the body goes through its evolutionary process right in the womb itself and it continues as the body grows. But this growth / evolution is purely morphological, a change in form. It is said that the body goes through the shapes of various forms within the womb itself and then from a baby to a child and then to an adult. This growth is limited in scope and we all know about it and it is a topic for biology and enough research has been done from that perspective in science.

Now, let us talk about the evolution of the soul. Does the soul really evolve? Shri. Parthasarathi Rajagopalachari, affectionately known as Chariji Maharaj has given extensive talks in this topic in his series of books, “The Principles of Sahaj Marg”, and clarified that the soul being pure and an “amsha” (element) of the divine, is already completely pure and nothing to evolve into. The Yogic literature talks about this fact at length as well, emphasizing the fact that the soul that is encompassed within this body is pure and has no characteristics to either evolve or devolve.

So, we are left only with the mind. Now, what really evolves in the mind? The mind, according to Indian philosophy and various Eastern traditions and spiritual sciences, has 4 components to it. These components are, the mind (manas), the consciousness (chit), the intellect (buddhi), and the ego (ahamkar). Of these 4 components, the consciousness is the playing ground for the other 3 components and based on the refinement of these 3 components, the level of consciousness is “adjusted” if such a word can be used for consciousness.

Looking into the 3 components and their roles, let us start with the first one, the mind. This is the mental aspect, the thinking aspect of the overall mind and its interfacing with the 5 senses. The Sahaj Marg way of Heartfulness meditation helps in regulating this component, bringing it under control. Considering the Heart as the seat of the soul, through Heartfulness meditation, the mental tendencies gets regulated and refined and one can say the mind begins to listen to the heart.

Next, we come to the intellect component of the mind. Here, we talk about knowledge versus wisdom. As one slowly progresses along the spiritual path of Sahaj Marg, through the work of the great Masters and the transmission that the practitioner receives, the Intellect gets refined to a great extent in a slow and subtle way. Whereas one initially tend to depend on the mind and on knowledge, the progression of the practitioner in the spiritual journey makes him more and more depend on his heart and a unique sense of wisdom and intuition develops in him. This happens in a very natural way in the practitioner’s journey, which is one reason why this system of Sahaj Marg is also called as the Natural Path meditation.

When we address the ego, Babuji Maharaj has talked about it and said that the ego cannot be killed or dissolved because if one does not have ego, he becomes a vegetable without the capacity to do anything. In fact, it is the ego that gives the drive force for one to say ‘I can’ or do anything. But, to attain higher levels of consciousness, the ego has to sublimated to a great extent. In Sahaj Marg, through the practice of Constant Remembrance and by gradually and naturally developing love and devotion for the Master, the practitioner can greatly reduce the effects of ego on his system. The practitioner now begins to understand that it is only the Master who is the real doer and that he is just an instrument in the hands of his maker and must tune himself to become a pure and un-obstructive instrument to get the work done.

So, by sublimating the ego, refining the intellect and regulating the mind, a person’s consciousness levels can be raised to great heights and it can reach the levels of divine consciousness. But as Babuji explains, most of these concepts have to be only experienced and cannot be talked about beyond a certain level. However, from all this explanation, one thing that comes out it is that, it is only the consciousness that evolves, from its current level of consciousness, progressively to higher levels of consciousness, super consciousness, and divine level of consciousness. This progressive growth or evolution or transformation of the conscious being is in-fact the sum and substance of a spiritual journey.
